Junior winners, GREECE

Thanks to the victory of Vassilis Vroustis and Dinos Doxiadis, Greece has now been added to the short list of European gold medal winners. This was the most sensational result at the 10th European Youth Pairs Championships, held in Opatija Croatia, July 14-17. ITALY - FRANCE - POLAND
the usual winners!

ITALY, Open series winners

It was once again ITALY who stood at the top of the ladder when this year's edition of the European Team Championships came to an end. Many believe we are witnessing the revival of the legendary Blue Team as this new generation of Italian players keep adding one gold medal to another as time passes by. The great contemporary Italians won the European open series title for the first time in 1995, and since then they have hardly looked back, winning all titles ever since, with the sole exception of 2008 when the title went to Norway. This year, the silver and bronze medals went to Poland and Israel.

Italy was not the only favorite who ascended to the podium at the 2010 European Team Championships, held in Ostend, Belgium, June 22 to July 3. FRANCE scored a great victory in the women series, when they finished ahead of The Netherlands and Sweden; this success makes France the overall leader in the European women series ever.

The seniors series was won by POLAND, with rival Denmark in second place. The only surprise of the championship came from Italy who won their first medal ever in this series.

Ostend '10 was a splendidly organized event mainly thanks to the efforts of the family of the late Paul Magerman, a pioneer of bridge development.

Change of guard in the EBL

Yves Aubry
With the election of Yves AUBRY of France as President of the European Bridge League, a new page in EBL history has started.

The election took place at the EBL General Assembly which convened in Ostend on 27 June 2010. Yves Aubry was the only candidate for the presidency and was elected by acclamation.

Yves Aubry has replaced Gianarrigo Rona who retired in Ostend after 11 years in office, having been first elected EBL President in 1999 in Malta. Gianarrigo Rona will be the new leader of the World Bridge Federation and is to assume his duties in October 2010.

Together with the new EBL President, elections took place for the entire EBL Executive Committee, which now comprises the following: Marc de Pauw (1st Vice President), Radoslaw Kielbasinski (Poland), Jens Auken (Hon. Secretary), David Harris (Treasurer), Jean-Charles Allavena, Sevinc Atay, Panos Gerontopoulos, Joseph Harsanyi, Jan Kamras, Filippo Palma, Pim Vaders (Members).

New European Master Points

After years of planning and deliberations, the new European Master Points (EMPs) have now been launched and are available through the EBL website (DEPARTMENTS/Master Points).

The new classification takes into account EBL and WBF (and IMSA) competitions, held since 1980, for which detailed information is available in the system. Two separate records are provided, in which members of European NBOs only are included:

  • The Historic Record contains all competitions since 1980, and lists all players awarded EMPs, including the deceased ones.
  • The Current Record takes into account competitions held over the past decade, and lists living players only.

Each of the two records allows separate listings for the various categories (open, women, youth, seniors). It is possible to see an analysis of the EMPs won by any player in all competitions, as well as the EMPs awarded to all players in any competition. Further filtering allows singling out a particular nationality, players with the same or similar names, etc.

The EMP plan provides titles (European Grand Master, European Master) according to the total of EMPs won. Other titles are given to those winning a European Championship of a certain category (Open, Women, Seniors, Juniors, Mixed). It is possible to see when any of these titles was achieved. All EMP information (points and titles) is also listed analytically in each person’s personal information card (under PEOPLE).

The EMP scheme is fully automatic. From now on, EMP awards will be calculated and posted minutes after the end of any EBL or WBF competition (provided that an accurate list of participants is available).
